Research products thinking about who willuse/used them and what they will/were used for, using informationfrom a number of sources, including ICT-based resources;
| Give the chn the design brief: A toy company, who produce dolls-houses, want toproduce a dolls house that replicates a Victorian house. The toysalready on the market are very expensive and the toy company wantthe chns designs to help them reach a younger market.
Show the chn a picture of a very expensiveVictorian dolls house (see resources) and ask the chn (usingquestion matrix): Whywas it made? What was it used for? Who would have had one? Wherewould it have been kept? Who might have/want one today? Why wouldpeople have had one/have one?
Explain to the chn that they will be working ingroups of 5-6 and that each group will research, design, plan andproduce a different room for a dolls house in the style of aVictorian house. Group chn and designate rooms: kitchen, livingroom/parlour, adults bedroom, bathroom, childs bedroom, nursery,dining room.
Tell the chn that they will be looking at variousstructures in their research. Watch A Day at the Great Exhibition video. Chnto make notes. Using the Resource Box from The V and A Museumwebsite (in ICT suite for independent research if possible)investigate the Great Exhibition of 1851, completing InvestigatingShelters 1 The Great Exhibition worksheet as they do so.
Using Thinking Hats discuss, teacher record anddisplay for future work: White hat Share any information you havefound about The Great Exhibition and The CrystalPalace with the class. Yellow hat What were the strengths of the GreatExhibition? What were the strengths ofthe design of the Crystal Palace? Black hat - What were the weaknesses of theGreat Exhibition? What were the weaknesses ofthe design of the Crystal Palace? Redhat Share your feelings about the Great Exhibition. Blue hat Consider what thinking is needed tomove forward with the project.
