Chooseappropriate operations to solve problems.

Write numbersentence on the board with operation missing. What operation do weneed to use to make it work? Write a sentence with an equals signin the middle. What do we know about each side of thecalculation?

Toknow the relationship between kilograms and grams

How many gramsare in a kg? What do we measure in kg? Ask children to write on wbin 1 minute anything that can be weighed in kg. If I had 1kg and500g how many grams do I have? Look at how to work out grams inkilograms and vice versa. Ask children to respond on wb to qs suchas if I had 1500g and wanted to swap it for kg and g what would Ihave?

Physically swapthe weights using g and kg measures

Answeringquestions from board. First section swapping grams for kg and g andsecond section swapping kg and g for just g.

Outside of classordering items from lightest to heaviest then using scales (read byTA) working out if they were correct.

Set problemswhich involve weight and rounding. Such as I have a bag of potatoesthat weigh 1600g is that nearest to 1kg or 2kg? How did you workthat out?

Read, to the nearest division and half-division, scales that arenumbered or partially numbered

To round weights to the nearest 100g.

Play scalesmaths work game. Explore. Who did you work out how much the itemweighed?

Look at IWBscale. Number the divisions going up in steps of 20 and place thearrow pointing at different weights. How much does this item weigh? How did you work it out? If the item weighs 65g what is thatrounded to the nearest 100g? Repeat using different numbereddivisions and placing the arrow at different points. Ask childrento round amount to nearest 100g and put answers on wb to identifythose who may find this difficult.

Read, to the nearest division and half-division, scales that arenumbered or partially numbered

Explain thatyesterday we learnt how to read weighing scales. Today we are goingto look at reading scales in a different situation athermometer. Look at scholastic interactive thermometer. Changethe divisions and ask children to work out what the temp is and howthey knew. Children to record on wb their answers to identify thosewho may find this difficult.

Set thetemperature to 4. Say to the chn - this is the temperature in themorning as I come to work. By lunch, the temperature is 13 Howmuch has the temperature increased? How did you work it out? Repeatfor other amounts.

To statesubtraction facts corresponding to addition fact and viceversa.

Write on theboard an addition grid. Children must work out ans and then underit write the corresponding subtraction fact.

To read time to5 minutes on analogue clock and 12 hours on digital clock.

Using the bigclock count around the clock showing that each number on the clockis worth 5 minutes. Set clock to different times asking children tosay what time is. Look at to times. Once we are past half past wesay minutes to. Big hand is for the minutes and small hand forhours. Give out the class set of clocks. Say a time and childrenset the clock. Assess those children who are confident/ strugglingwith this work. On the board write a digital time like 7:30. Whattime is this? Repeat this for quarter past and quarter to times.Look at maths works, handling data, time activity. Hide theanalogue clock and move the digital forward in 5 minute intervalsallowing the children to tell you what time is shown in eachinstance. Ask questions such as what will the time be in 1 hour.Use the activity to check. Set children in groups for independentwork.
