Key LearningObjectives Revision ofpreviously studied concepts about databases.

Unit 5BAnalysing Data and Asking QuestionsChildrenlearn:

*      that searches canbe carried out using more than one criterion

*      that informationfound is often unhelpful

*      to use complexsearches to locate information

*      to use ICT totest an hypothesis

Unit 5CEvaluating Information, Checking Accuracy & QuestioningPlausibility Childrenlearn:

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
*      that informationheld on databases may contain errors and this can effectresults
*      to identify andcorrect implausible and inaccurate data.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Unit 5EControlling devices Childrenlearn:

*      that devices canbe controlled through direct instructions

*      that a controlbox and software can be used to control an output device

*      to control morethan one output device

*      to create asequence of instructions which can control a number of outputdevices

Unit 1

5B Analysing Dataand Asking Questions

Revision of keyconcepts: Databases. Discuss an address book as a kind ofdatabase. Discuss childrens experiences of the usefulness andlimitations of the internet highlighting esp. the occurrence oferrors. Explain that the children are going to make their owndatabases about English monarchs including the Tudors. Revise theskills of setting up a file and recording data.

At the end of thelesson children are shown how to save the file they havecreated.

Childrencontribute to a discussion about databases. Their activity is tocreate their own databases on the English monarchs including theTudors.

Less able aresupported to set up their files and begin entering data on theirdatabase. More able are encouraged to screen data provided forinaccuracies.

Childrendemonstrate through discussion and the work produced thatthey:

*      understand some ofthe

databases

*      are able to set upa

onto it and save.

Unit 2

Teachinginput about how to search a database. Specifically children useand understand the differences between:

*      = (and =) insearches

*      AND insearches

*      OR in theirsearches

Childreninterrogate the English monarchs database with a variety of simplesearches and and/or searches. Children learn how to create simplegraphs from search results.

Childreninterrogate their databases for information. Graph results ofsearches.

Childrendemonstrate through their work that they can use and understandthe differences between:

*      = (and =) insearches

*      AND insearches

*      OR in theirsearches

They showthey are able to test a simple hypothesis through using certainsearch criteria and examining the results.

Children show theycan create simple graphs from search results.

This unit linkswith our history topic - The Tudors. Children can carry outsearches enabling them to compare the Tudor monarchs with otherEnglish monarchs.

Unit 1

Unit 5CEvaluating Information, Checking Accuracy & QuestioningPlausibility Teaching inputabout databases and errors building on childrens understandingof the limitations of the internet.

Children arepresented with a database about the Tudors and they investigate itfor errors. They recognise the effect that errors will have onsearches. Children correct inaccurate data.

Skills andlearning in this series of units are assessed and reinforcedthrough a self-assessment activity & plenary.

Childreninvestigate a pre-prepared database about the Tudors containingmany errors. They suggest ways they can verify the information andthen correct as appropriate.

Less ablesupported to spot the errors on the database. More able encouragedto suggest ways in which errors may be spotted.

Childrendemonstrate through discussion that they understand some of theimplications of incorrect data.

They show throughtheir work that they are able to identify and correct inaccurate orimplausible data.

History topic the Tudors.

Children can usewhat they know to investigate the accuracy of a ready-madedatabase.

Unit 1

Unit 5EControlling devices Teaching input andclass discussion about the uses of control technology eg. trafficlights, central heating, school bells. Children experiment withsymbols and create diagrams to show a sequence of instructions foroperating a zebra crossing beacon.

Sharediagrams.

Children produce adiagram to show a sequence of instructions for operating a zebracrossing beacon.

Extension:lighthouse instructions & traffic lights.
